What we believe

POLITICAL STATES EXIST TO SECURE NATURAL RIGHTS.

We believe in a sovereign God. We believe that God’s will is the supreme natural law that governs all of nature, including mankind. We believe that every man is born into a natural state with independent, equal, and perpetual natural rights. We believe our natural rights include life, liberty, and our estates for the purpose of pursuing God’s will, the source of man’s ultimate happiness.

We believe man is sinful, does not always conform to God’s will, and is prone to invade the natural rights of others. In these cases, men are justified in defending their natural rights from the invaders. But in our natural state, each man must discern for himself what the natural law is, to judge whether the natural law has been invaded, and to execute the natural law himself. If the invader resists, a state of war ensues and the stronger tends to defeat the weaker, without regard to the supreme law of justice.

We believe that, in our natural state, our natural rights are vulnerable to insecurity and disorder. For this reason, men are driven into political society by consenting to a common authority, which is the political state. The purpose of the political state is to preserve our natural rights to life, liberty, and our estates by formulating, executing, and judging known and settled common laws. We believe the political state has no authority beyond that which men consent to.

We believe these ideas were refined, systematized, and popularized over millennia by Greek, Roman, and Christian European philosophers, particularly John Locke who Thomas Jefferson described as among the “trinity of the three greatest men the world had ever produced.” These ideas not only formed the intellectual justification and sentimental inspiration for the American Revolution, John Adams characterized them as the very “principles on which the whole government over us now stands.” Jefferson summarized these ideas in our Declaration of Independence.

WE HOLD THESE TRUTHS TO BE SELF-EVIDENT, THAT ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL, THAT THEY ARE ENDOWED BY THEIR CREATOR WITH CERTAIN UNALIENABLE RIGHTS, THAT AMONG THESE ARE LIFE, LIBERTY AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS.--THAT TO SECURE THESE RIGHTS, GOVERNMENTS ARE INSTITUTED AMONG MEN, DERIVING THEIR JUST POWERS FROM THE CONSENT OF THE GOVERNED, --THAT WHENEVER ANY FORM OF GOVERNMENT BECOMES DESTRUCTIVE OF THESE ENDS, IT IS THE RIGHT OF THE PEOPLE TO ALTER OR TO ABOLISH IT, AND TO INSTITUTE NEW GOVERNMENT, LAYING ITS FOUNDATION ON SUCH PRINCIPLES AND ORGANIZING ITS POWERS IN SUCH FORM, AS TO THEM SHALL SEEM MOST LIKELY TO EFFECT THEIR SAFETY AND HAPPINESS.

Posterity! You will never know, how much it cost the present Generation, to preserve your Freedom! I hope you will make a good Use of it. If you do not, I shall repent in Heaven, that I ever took half the Pains to preserve it.
